The little girl that lived 3.3 million years agoA three year old child that lived 3.3 million years ago holds the key to the mysteries of evolution. In a scorching desert heat where wild animals roam and where tribal warfare is rife, lie the pieces to a puzzle of human evolution. Working in the heart of Africa they came across a little girl now known as Selam (pronounced Se-lahm}. In the northern region of Ethiopia in an area known as Dikika. Researchers in the heart of Africa found a small face peering up at them on the 10th of December 2000 where it made world headlines. It was then that they realized that they had found the oldest child. It took the team 5 years to remove this incredible discovery from the Sandstone in which it was embedded. Her face is the size of an ape’s but from the smooth eyebrows and short eyeteeth the scientists could tell she was a humanoid – u human ancestor that walked upright. Scientists have named her Salem which means “peace” in Arabic she’s an AUSTRALOPITHECUSAFARENIS say that fast 5 time’s., the same as Lucy, the famous fossil of an adult woman found in Ethiopia in 1974. Lucy is an ancestor of Homo sapiens. Selam has also been called “Lucy’s child”. Salem is the oldest and most complete skeleton found to date and may help scientists gain a better understanding of how humanoids evolved from big apes. Unlike Lucy Selam’s fossil remains include her body, fingers, and a foot. Most important she has a face.
It is believed that she died in a flood. As her fossils were found on a steep hill. Scientists believe that the area was lush green filled with rivers and large amounts of Hippo’s and Rhino’s and crocodile type creatures. National Geographic magazine created an impression on how she might have looked like 3.3 million years ago. |
